Concept Board Guidance Notes

The main aim of a concept board within the engineering industry is to sell your ideas and concept to a group of stakeholders. These are people who have an interest in the work you are doing and will potentially give you the money to make your ideas a reality. For today’s challenge you are selling your concept to the judges. I have a wide experience in the automotive industry designing and sell concepts to senior managers. I will share my knowledge with you in the tips to a good concept board below:

  • Your concept board will be A1 size and the layout should be focused around at least one sketch, drawing or picture of the car. To give an overall impression of the style and shape of your car.
  • Around the sketch, drawing or picture add information, facts, figures and diagrams highlighting which features make this car unique. Show what is currently available and how your car is better. Highlight the potential benefits a customer would gain from buying your car.
  • To maximise the potential impact of your concept board the following information should be included:
    • Vehicle specification – this is created using the business simulation software
    • Key financial information – this is created using the business simulation software
    • Your marketing strategy – Show the key features of your car and the market the car is aimed at. How are you going to reach this market? Think about how car manufacturers currently advertise their products, can you think of any new methods?
    • How have you addressed any external factors? For example – If there is pressure from the government to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles has this been achieved and if so how?

The key is to make your concept board as eye catching as possible, whilst not using too many words but ensuring that you include all the relevant information. I have provided an example in PowerPoint in A1 size to help you develop your ideas.
